Understanding what household waste does and doesn’t belong in your yellow lid bin is essential for maximising recycling efforts and reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfill.

Thanks to the funding support from the Queensland Government’s Let’s Get it Sorted Partnership Program, Southern Downs Regional Council is implementing a new awareness campaign to encourage the community to dispose of waste in the right bins

Southern Downs Councillor Sarah Deane said the Let’s Get It Sorted campaign would play a vital role in encouraging better waste management practices within the community.

“Reducing the amount of waste going to landfill starts at home, and small changes in recycling habits can make a big difference,” Councillor Deane said.

“Success depends on everyone doing their part, and that starts with making sure recyclable materials go in the right bin.

“When we recycle correctly, we not only reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill but we also help protect the environment and support our community.

"In particular, education will focus on some key contamination issues identified from a snapshot audit in the region at the end of 2024.

“By reducing soft plastic contamination, eliminating bagged items, and ensuring the safe disposal of hazardous materials like small batteries and needles, we're committed to making recycling safer and more effective, and creating a more sustainable future for the Southern Downs.”

A recycling bin audit will also be undertaken across the region from March through to October 2025 to assess the impact of the campaign and help focus education at the household level.

The Let’s Get It Sorted campaign will run from March through to May across the Southern Downs and will include radio, print and online advertising as well as community pop-up events.

This initiative is proudly supported by the Queensland Government’s Recycling and Jobs Fund.
