Southern Downs Regional Council is taking the next step in delivering key electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure to boost local tourism and economic activity with two new proposed sites at Australiana Park in Warwick and Weeroona Park in Stanthorpe now open for community feedback.
Council invites residents and visitors to help shape the future of EV infrastructure through its Have Your Say process via mail@sdrc.qld.gov.au or phone 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372).
Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton encourages locals and EV charger users to contribute to the conversation.
“EV charging stations will play an important role in meeting the needs of our growing number of visitors and local businesses who rely on electric vehicles,” Mayor Hamilton said.
“By sharing your feedback, you will help us ensure these sites are well-positioned to support both convenience and economic growth across the region.”
Southern Downs Councillor Sheryl Windle said expanding EV infrastructure would support the region’s tourism and business sectors.
“Having more EV charging stations across the region will increase the Southern Downs’ appeal as a visitor-friendly and sustainable destination,” Councillor Windle said.
“Investing in this infrastructure is about attracting eco-conscious travellers and ensuring the region is ready to meet future demand.”
Councillor Sarah Deane said the project aligns with Council’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
“This is a great opportunity to grow our green transport network and offer residents and visitors more sustainable travel options,” Councillor Deane said.
“This initiative is a step towards a cleaner, more connected future for the Southern Downs.”
Since 2019, University of Queensland (UQ) has operated a 50kW DC charger at Acacia Avenue, Warwick. However following a technical failure in 2024, UQ advised the unit is beyond repair and will not be replaced due to cost. Councillors at the Ordinary Council Meeting on 19 February 2025 voted to authorise the Chief Executive Officer to finalise arrangements with UQ and to find alternative providers.
Council is now leading the charge to pursue fast-charging solutions with an Ultra-rapid DC fast charger solution proposed for Australiana Park in Warwick and proposing 60kw and 22kw chargers in the Lock Street carparks adjacent to Weeroona Park in Stanthorpe.
