At the Ordinary Council Meeting on Wednesday 19 March 2025, Southern Downs Regional Council endorsed the Stage 2 application for the 2024-28 Local Government Grant and Subsidies Program (LGGSP), prioritising the renewal of aging sewer infrastructure and boosting network efficiency.

Council was shortlisted in Stage 1 of the application process of the $2.875m Sewer Relining Project in Warwick and Stanthorpe, and staff will now finalise and submit the Stage 2 application by 31 May 2025 with the aim of securing this funding.

Southern Downs Councillor Carla Pidgeon said this endorsement is another milestone in Council's efforts to secure funding and address critical upgrades to essential water infrastructure.

“Securing external funding is crucial for maintaining and improving the sewer infrastructure in Warwick and Stanthorpe,” said Councillor Pidgeon.

“Stage 2 will complete the funding submission for this essential three-year relining project, ensuring reliable and efficient sewer services for our community.

"Critical upgrades for essential infrastructure remain a priority for our Council, and by endorsing the Stage 2 application, we are advancing our commitment to providing high-quality infrastructure for our community."

With a total project cost of $2.875m, Council will contribute $1.15m and seek remainder funding for $1.725m through the LGGSP program.

“The 2024-28 LGGSP is a proactive initiative that supports essential local government projects, helping communities like ours maintain and improve vital infrastructure,” Councillor Pidgeon added.

The project will involve relining 10km of sewer, CCTV inspections of 40km of sewer and relining 30 manholes.

The aim of the LGGSP is to support councils deliver priority infrastructure and critical infrastructure projects that meet the identified needs of their communities and which support safe, liveable and prosperous local communities and sustainable councils.
