Southern Downs Regional Council is promoting healthier lifestyles and a cleaner environment ahead of Walk to Work Day on Friday 6 September by encouraging the community to consider active transport for short trips.
Championed by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, the annual event advocates for people to walk to and from work, take a lunchtime walk and use the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator.
Councillor for Natural Environment, Climate and Sustainability Sarah Deane supports active options over driving, highlighting the significant benefits for personal health, cost savings and reduced environmental impacts.
“Our small towns are perfect for riding a bicycle, walking, jogging, taking the bus, skateboarding, using a scooter and, like me, pushing a stroller,” said Councillor Deane.
“By choosing alternative methods for shorter trips, we can make simple changes that have significant benefits for our health, our wallets and our environment.”
Councillor Deane also encourages residents to think about how to incorporate walking into their daily routines.
“Walking to the shops for a few items, walking to school or playgrounds with children, walking to work while listening to a podcast, or walking the dog along our river paths are just a few examples,” she added.
“There are so many physical health benefits to being more active, including improving your sleep quality and positive mental health. Being outside and around nature can make problems seem easier to deal with.
“Promoting active transport also aligns with one of the priority areas in Council’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2021-31 of reducing our carbon footprint, and by making these small changes and walking to work, we can all do our bit for the environment.”
