It’s time to celebrate the extraordinary community champions who make Southern Downs shine, and Southern Downs Regional Council is calling for nominations to honour these inspirational individuals whose dedication, service and community spirit deserves recognition.

In a refreshed format, the 2025 Citizen of the Year Awards will be celebrated on Australia Day as a unified event that reflects the inclusive spirit of the Southern Downs community. Additionally, a Junior Cultural Citizen of the Year category has been introduced, bringing cultural recognition into alignment with the existing sports categories that distinguish between junior and adult achievers.

The 2025 Citizen of the Year Award categories include:
• Citizen of the Year Award
• Junior Citizen of the Year Award
• Sportsperson or Sports Administrator of the Year Award
• Junior Sportsperson of the Year
• Cultural Citizen of the Year Award
• Junior Cultural Citizen of the Year Award
• Community Event of the Year Award

Southern Downs Councillor Morwenna Harslett encouraged the community to reflect on those who have had a positive impact on the liveability of the region.

“The Citizen of the Year Awards provide an important opportunity to celebrate those who often work quietly behind the scenes, but whose efforts ripple out to benefit everyone,” Councillor Harslett said.

“Our community is rich with individuals who give their time, talent and energy to making the Southern Downs a better place, and I urge you to nominate those inspiring people who embody our region’s spirit of generosity and commitment.”

Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the awards are a timely opportunity to recognise those who go above and beyond for their community.

“The Citizen of the Year Awards are a chance to shine a light on the incredible efforts of our community champions,” Mayor Hamilton said.

“Whether it’s through volunteering, leadership or acts of kindness, these awards celebrate the spirit of giving and community service.

“Let’s come together to honour those who make a difference in our community on Australia Day. Nominate your community champion today!”

Nominations close at 5pm Sunday 1 December 2024. Forms and guidelines are available on Council’s website at https://www.sdrc.qld.gov.au/our-region/explore-southern-downs/events-and-festivals/southern-downs-citizen-of-the-year-awards-2025.

Council will also soon seek expressions of interest from community members to join the Citizen of the Year Awards selection panel, fostering greater community involvement in the nomination assessment process.
