All Australian Telstra 3G Networks are scheduled to close on Sunday 28 October 2024.
If you have any critical services provided by other suppliers such as those below, which use 3G networks, please ensure they are upgraded to ensure service continuity.
- Fire Monitoring Systems
- Lift Phones
- EFTPOS
- Monitoring Units
- Backup devices
How do I know if my device will be able to call 000 from 28 October 2024?
It is not possible to determine from the device if it supports VoLTE emergency calling, or if it is locked to 3G for emergency calls to 000. Devices are locked as part of their software and not user configurable.
Special Note: Under no circumstances should customers call 000 to test their device as it does not confirm this issue and will interfere with the critical operations of the emergency 000 service.
Mobile Phone / Handset Devices (smart phone & feature phone)
If the Mobile Phone / Handset was purchased from Telstra after January 2019, it supports VoLTE emergency calling. If it was purchased earlier, or not from Telstra, it may not be compatible.
To find out if your mobile phone is impacted, SMS 3 to 3498
An automated reply message will identify the device and whether it is known to be compatible with the latest networks.
Non-Handset Devices
Telstra cannot accurately determine if non-handset devices do not support VoLTE Emergency calling. This is generally due to multiple manufacturers using generic modules in their specialised devices which may or may not be configured to support VoLTE emergency calling.
Non-handset devices used for calling need to support VoLTE emergency calling.
Non-handset devices not used for calling are not required to support VoLTE emergency calling.
Device settings
To connect to 4G/5G your devices settings must not be locked to 3G. To make voice calls VoLTE must be enable in your device settings. Find out more: http://telstra.com/enablevolte
Circuit Switch Data
Circuit switch data (CSD) transmission will not be supported after 3G Closure from 28 October 2024 and an alternative solution will be required. Telstra's 4G/5G networks do not support CSD. Telstra will cease billing for CSD from 28 October 2024. Your service will continue to operate without CSD and will continue to be billed - if no longer required please cancel the service. Please reach out to your Telstra Account team should you require further support.
Where there is any doubt, we recommend the device is upgraded.
