Southern Downs Regional Council has commenced its 2024/25 Bitumen Reseal Program, undertaking proactive road maintenance on 16 local roads to enhance safety and extend the lifespan of the region’s sealed road network.

Director Infrastructure Services Nick Wellwood said this year’s program is part of Council’s ongoing commitment to maintaining the Southern Downs’ 1,366 km of sealed roads.

“Council’s reseal program is vital for maintaining the safety and longevity of our roads,” Mr Wellwood said.

“By resealing, we can reduce future maintenance costs and extend the lifespan of our roads, ensuring they remain in a safe condition and resistant to weather-related damage.

“Without this essential upkeep, roads would deteriorate faster, leading to issues like potholes.

“Preparation works for resealing works requires proper planning which occurs the year before and includes pothole repairs, pavement rehabilitation in some instances and establishing non-functioning roadside drainage.”

Residents are advised that works will cause minimal disruption, with each residential street completed in a single day. Advance notifications will be delivered to mailboxes and updates can be found on Council’s website.

Following resurfacing, residents may notice loose stones on the roads. These stones help ensure a proper surface cover during the resealing process and will either embed into the pavement or be cleared by street sweepers shortly after.

Council appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation during these vital road improvements. More information is available on Council’s factsheet.

Roads included in the 2024/25 Bitumen Reseal Program are those streets which are ready for resealing, with minor preparation works required. As such similar condition roads requiring minimal preparation works from 2025/26 program have been bought forward.
