The remarkable achievements of 2024 Paris Olympian bronze medallist Matt Denny will be celebrated with two significant legacy projects in his hometown of Allora.
Following overwhelming support from public consultation, the discus ring at the Allora Cricket Grounds will be named in his honour and a walking path in Dalrymple Park will feature markers highlighting his milestone discus records.
In endorsing the unanimous vote, Councillor Carla Pidgeon said the legacy projects are a fitting tribute to Matt’s determination and spirit.
“It is a privilege and honour to be a part of this historic vote that celebrates Matt’s incredible journey,” Councillor Pidgeon said.
“We have always been proud to call Matt one of our own, and these legacy projects are a lasting reminder of how far local talent can go.
“His achievements not only bring pride to our community but also stand as a reminder of the power of hard work and perseverance.”
Councillor Russell Wantling said Matt’s story serves as inspiration for young people, showing them that big dreams can be achieved no matter where you grow up.
“These projects honour Matt’s achievements and celebrate the excellence and dedication required to compete at the highest level,” Councillor Wantling said.
“This is more than a tribute to Matt’s success; it’s a celebration of what makes our community special—supporting and uplifting our own.”
Plans for the walking path will be presented to Council as they are developed. Council officers will continue to work closely with Matt to determine which records will be featured along the path, ensuring that his legacy is accurately represented.
