Southern Downs Regional Council is excited to let Stanthorpe literature enthusiasts know that there is a hive of activity behind the scenes at the newly expanded Stanthorpe Library as staff prepare to welcome the community to its new abode for the first time on Monday 8 July.

With construction of the revamped facility now completed, interim library services at the Stanthorpe Council Administration Building will be closed from Monday 1 July to Saturday 6 July while the library’s collection is relocated and the finishing touches are added to the upgraded facility.

Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the excitement about the re-opening of the new library is building.

“Our regional library facilities are much loved, and both the staff and the community are very excited about this new chapter for our Stanthorpe Library,” Mayor Hamilton said.

“I would like to thank the community for its patience and understanding as staff continued to provide library services temporarily from the Stanthorpe Administration Building during the project’s construction.”

Southern Downs Councillor Morwenna Harslett said the highly anticipated opening of the new facility is a fantastic result for the community.

“We are very fortunate to have such a vibrant literary and cultural scene on the Southern Downs and the opening of the newly refurbished library is a significant milestone for our community who have whole-heartedly supported the project from beginning to end,” Councillor Harslett said.

“The Stanthorpe Library offers our community more than just books and the facility is considered an essential community asset.

“Many people in our community use our libraries as a safe and peaceful haven from a sometimes-boisterous society, and the new and improved facility caters to a changing world where literacy is still paramount but sometimes looks a little different to the traditional model.

“The expanded facility will offer a more versatile space for our growing region and foster a stronger sense of community, with the capacity for improved services and a larger area for the library’s extensive $1 million book collection.

“While the project experienced some unforeseen contractual administration setbacks, it has taken a team effort to keep the project on track for delivery for a timely completion date.”

During the relocation, the community will still have access to online library services at https://southerndowns.spydus.com/.
