Southern Downs Regional Council has welcomed the Queensland Government’s swift intervention to secure the short-term future of the Queensland College of Wine Tourism (QCWT), with Mayor Melissa Hamilton praising the Crisafulli Government for its support and commitment to sustaining regional Queensland’s vital industries and educational opportunities.

“While we acknowledge the pressures on the University of Southern Queensland and thank them for their contribution to our region over many years, this left QCWT in a position where it may have closed at the end of the year while its future was explored,” Mayor Hamilton said.

“QCWT is a very important part of our community, with the renowned dining at Varias and cellar door facility showcasing our local producers and their exceptional offerings.

“The conference centre and the training opportunities for local students are also a vital support not just to our region’s growing tourism industry but also to students from across Queensland.

“Given the new Government’s commitment to regional Queensland, it is reassuring to see such an immediate response to ensure this important facility remains open.

“On behalf of our community I thank the Premier David Crisafulli MP, Minister Ros Bates MP and our local member James Lister MP for working together and showing their commitment to the Southern Downs region.”
