Southern Downs Regional Council is building a stronger, more sustainable region by offering accredited traineeships, apprenticeships and certificate courses to foster career pathways and develop skills that are essential to the strength of our community.

Currently, 32 Council staff are undertaking traineeships or apprenticeships, with an additional eight employees pursuing fully funded certificate courses supported by either Council or external funding sources.

Southern Downs Councillor Morwenna Harslett said Council is committed to fostering local development and providing opportunities that support the community and region’s workforce.

“Investing in local talent isn’t just about filling roles; it’s about creating opportunities that empower individuals and strengthen our community from the ground up,” Councillor Harslett said.

“These programs offer opportunities for job seekers, students and career changers, providing hands-on experience and nationally recognised qualifications that prepare them to thrive in the modern workforce.

“Equipped with practical skills and recognised qualifications, our graduates are well-prepared to thrive in the local job market and contribute to the growth and prosperity of our region.

“By combining paid work with training, participants gain the practical skills needed to excel in their roles while earning qualifications that open doors to future career opportunities.

“Whether you’re a student planning your future or someone seeking to upskill or pivot your career, Council’s programs provide pathways to rewarding, locally-based opportunities. Together, we’re laying the foundation for long-term regional success.”

Graduates of Council’s traineeship program are often well-positioned to transition into ongoing roles within Council or local industries, ensuring a steady pipeline of skilled talent to meet the region’s workforce demands.

Council also supports higher learning through diplomas, degrees and post-graduate qualifications through a study assistance procedure.

Applications are currently open for Business Trainees until Tuesday 7 January 2025. Applications for Civil Trainees close on Tuesday 10 December 2024. For more information on career opportunities and traineeships at Council, visit https://www.sdrc.qld.gov.au/council/careers-at-council.
