The revamped Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery and Library precinct was officially opened today.

A plaque unveiling ceremony was attended by Assistant Minister for Regional Development Anthony Chisholm, marking a significant milestone for the region’s thriving arts community.

Stanthorpe’s newly expanded, state-of-the art creative hub boasts more space, enhanced services, modern fit-out and improved fire safety for millions of dollars of artwork and books.

It created 37 jobs during construction, as well as another two ongoing jobs.

The $7.96 million Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery and Library Expansion project received $2 million in funding from the Australian Government, with Southern Downs Regional Council contributing the remainder.

Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Senator for Queensland, Anthony Chisholm said: “This new state-of-the-art facility will offer residents the opportunity to discover and learn more about art, while also providing a better home for the library’s $1 million collection of books and the gallery’s $2.5 million art collection.

“The new precinct will also improve literature, arts and cultural experiences for the Stanthorpe community and help secure the town’s status as a cultural hub in the region.

“Importantly, the development features a storage solution that minimises the risk of fire damage and is a significant improvement towards protecting the libraries records and history of the community.

“This is yet another demonstration of the Australian Government’s ongoing commitment to investing in local priority infrastructure and community projects in our regional town centres.”

Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Melissa Hamilton said: “This is a great day for Stanthorpe’s beloved art gallery and library which hold a very special place in our town’s history and culture.

“It is also a wonderful day for our talented artists, literary enthusiasts, dedicated staff and valued volunteers who now have the opportunity to see this dream project come to fruition.

“This rejuvenation project is also more than simply art and literature – it’s about building community spirit, showcasing exceptional local talent and enhancing our region’s liveability to visitors as a must-see arts and cultural destination.

“Council and our community are deeply grateful for the support and funding generously provided by the Australian Government.”

Southern Downs Regional Council Councillor Morwenna Harslett said: “The value of art and literature in society is too great to quantify. Having this state-of-the-art precinct as a new space to bring us together encourages community cohesion, reduces isolation and provides a contemporary home for us to express our identity and learn about our past, present, and future.

“The new Stanthorpe Art Gallery and Library precinct is a treasured investment for our community, reminding us of the world around us and how we influence each other and impact our environment.”
