Southern Downs Regional Council is taking practical steps to simplify how rate and water consumption notices are issued by consolidating the two notices into one comprehensive notice, effective from the 2024/25 financial year.

Council has historically issued the first half year rate notices in late July and water consumption notices separately in September.

Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the new approach reflected Council’s commitment to supporting the community during financial challenging times while still delivering essential services across the region.

“This initiative aligns with our commitment to continuously improve our services and ensure we’re meeting the needs of our community in the most efficient way possible,” Mayor Melissa Hamilton said.

“This new system lowers the costs associated with issuing and processing notices, allowing Council to provide more efficient services in other core business areas.

“Moreover, the streamlined notices will address the previous challenge of overlapping notice periods which led to a four-month gap where adjustments couldn’t be processed.

“We’re also excited about the integration of smart meters, which will allow us to shorten water billing timeframes and further enhance the service we provide.”

The first of these new, combined notices is scheduled to be issued in mid-September 2024, covering the period from 1 July 2024 to 31 December 2024. In addition, Council is encouraging ratepayers to consider going paperless by opting to receive their notices via email, which is a safer, more secure and an environmentally friendly option.

Mayor Hamilton also said that Council offered a number of different payment methods to accommodate different financial positions.

“We understand that many residents are feeling the pinch of rising costs, and our goal is to provide a service that not only supports the community during these challenging times but also makes managing household expenses a little easier,” Mayor Hamilton added.

“Paying your rates by advance instalments can be a convenient way to manage your finances and ensure that you stay on top of all your obligations.

“Ratepayers can pay a set amount at regular intervals, such as monthly or quarterly, rather than paying the full amount in one lump sum, and by doing so, spread the cost over the year, making it easier to budget.

“For those who might be struggling to meet your rate payments, please contact Council to negotiate a confidential payment plan.”

For more information or assistance, ratepayers are encouraged to visit the Council’s website or contact the Customer Service team. Council appreciates the community’s support as these improvements are rolled out.
