Southern Downs Regional Council advises the community that construction of important flood mitigation and road safety works on Homestead Road Bridge over Rosenthal Creek commenced on Wednesday 1 November 2023.
Council acknowledges the unexpected initial delay in commencing the critical works and is pleased to advise that the contractor has begun construction of this significant piece of infrastructure.
Thanks to $1,172,000 funding from the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Program and $293,000 from Council, the $1.465m project will upgrade the low-level floodway to a single lane bridge crossing and improve the approaches to reduce the risk and impact of flooding on the urban road.
Council’s Manager Works James Varughese said Council looks forward to delivering on this project and enhancing road safety for local and agricultural road users.
“The Homestead Road Bridge has been identified as an area of concern for some time. Despite the unavoidable delayed commencement, we look forward to improving this vital piece of infrastructure for the local community and essential agricultural road users,” Mr Varughese said.
“The project will improve road safety and provide much needed flood immunity for residents and industry while also considering environmental impacts by ensuring minimum disturbance to the creek banks.
“During construction, the safety of road users and crews is paramount, and we encourage all road users to respect the directions of on-site workers and signage to keep the site incident-free and the project progressing.
“Our road crews will help ensure that local residents in the area still have access to and from their properties, however there may be minor delays with stop/go arrangements which we will endeavour to keep to a minimum.
“The project is expected to be completed early in the new 2024 calendar year, and Council appreciates the community’s cooperation and patience during construction.”
