The Killarney community has been heard.
Following extensive public engagement and comprehensive reviews, Southern Downs Regional Council has committed to the first stage of providing extended library services to the town by collaborating with the Killarney Co-op to run a community book exchange.
The exciting new partnership will offer a browsing collection of library items while further options for a more established operation are considered.
Southern Downs Councillor Sheryl Windle said she had been impressed with the community’s determination and she looked forward to the next chapter of the journey.
“Libraries connect people and play a pivotal role in supporting the cultural fabric of a community,” Councillor Windle said.
“Killarney is one of our region’s proudest townships and the community’s voice on the future direction of library services has been heard.
“Council looks forward to collaborating closely with the Killarney Co-op while viable options for establishing a stand-alone library shopfront for Killarney are considered.”
Killarney Co-op General Manager Marissa Costello said: “Thank you to all involved in reviewing the library services in Killarney.
“We are looking forward to the installation of a community book exchange in the Co-op to provide a service to Killarney while Council works towards the possibility of a full library.
“We will continue to work with Council and interested locals to make the book exchange a valued space for the community.”
