Southern Downs Regional Council crews are prioritising emergency works to repair a recently collapsed culvert on Charleys Gully Road which threatens to restrict access to some local properties.
Ongoing wet weather has further impacted initial flood damage to the important rural area and Council is working closely with the relevant authorities to fast-track approvals and source materials amid critical supply chain issues.
Manager Works, James Varughese said engineers immediately attended the site to assess the recent damage and consider viable solutions to mitigate the impact on local road users.
“Council can confirm a large culvert on Charleys Gully Road has collapsed following consecutive wet weather events,” Mr Varughese said.
“The damaged culvert had already been logged with the Queensland Recovery Authority (QRA) for funding assistance, however the complete collapse of culvert further narrows the road for traffic and now presents a challenge for access to some properties, especially if the situation deteriorates further.
“As there is no alternative access, Council deems the situation to be critical and requiring immediate repairs.
“A detour is not considered viable as this option would impact a private property upstream.
“We are currently working closely with the QRA for an exemption to proceed with the necessary emergency works.
“From time to time unforeseen events can occur that impact the gruelling schedule of works underway across the region, however Council is committed to respond swiftly and prioritise works as necessary.”
Repair works at Charleys Gully Road is planned to commence Monday 27 March 2023, weather permitting.
Council appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation as it navigates a complex flood recovery and capital works program.
