Killarney’s dream of expanded library services embarked on an exciting new chapter this week with the official opening of a dedicated library space at the Killarney Co-op.
Following a recent survey indicating that 74% of respondents wanted a browsing library collection in the township as ‘soon as possible or in six to 12 months’, Southern Downs Regional Council voted at the Ordinary Meeting on Wednesday 24 May to support an initiative that would offer a collection of books, media and other items for community exchange.
Council has collaborated closely with the Co-op to house the new space with exchange items, shelving and furniture, all donated by Southern Downs Regional Libraries.
Killarney Co-op board chair Andrew Petersen said offering the community book exchange under the Co-op’s roof was a natural progression and was reflective of the organisation’s 101-year-old history.
“Throughout history, the Co-op has always been involved in stepping into the breach when there has been the need for a service, from basic essentials to cultural enrichment,” Mr Petersen said.
“We strive to be a pillar of support to our residents. The community book exchange is no different. We recognise the importance of bringing joy and reading and access to literature to our community.
“It is a testament to our commitment to go beyond the boundaries of convenience and self-interest, and instead focus on the collective well-being of our town.”
Southern Downs Deputy Mayor Ross Bartley said Council had heard the sentiment of the community and supported their vision to expand library services.
“Libraries are more than just books – they offer social and cultural context for a community,” Mr Bartley said.
“The Killarney community has been very focused and determined to enhance library services to the township and Council deemed it important to support the community in taking this next step forward while we consider future options.
“I would like to thank everyone for the collaborative effort in delivering this valuable community project promptly and seamlessly.”
Killarney Co-op General Manager Marissa Costello was excited to welcome the community book exchange to the Co-op and recognised the importance of adding the exchange service to the community’s hub.
“We are thrilled to have the book exchange open to the public and we would like to thank all of those who have assisted in making this happen,” Ms Costello said.
“There have already been some fabulous books donated by the libraries and also community members so we are looking forward to welcoming everyone to come along and find their next great read.”
Community book exchanges are free.
The opening of the Killarney Book Exchange is part of Council’s broader commitment to improve outreach services to towns and communities throughout the region.
