Travelling by car has a big impact on the environment, our wallet, and our health.
There are many ways to get from A to B and Southern Downs Regional Council is encouraging the community to reduce the region’s carbon footprint by getting out of cars, onto bikes, into sneakers or onto buses.
Adopted in 2021, the Southern Downs Environmental and Sustainability Strategy 2021-2031 outlines Council’s commitment to sustainability and the region’s natural environment. This document specifies achievable goals that support opportunities for future generations, including cooler streets, increased availability of active transport and reduced reliance on private vehicles.
In supporting the strategy, Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi challenged residents to consider how they can have a beneficial impact on reducing the region’s carbon footprint by choosing active transport alternatives.
“It is important that our environmental resources are protected and enhanced now and into the future,” Mayor Pennisi said.
“Council has a raft of initiatives that champion a sustainable future that includes maintaining a healthy environment for people to live, work, play and stay.
“One such cog in the wheel is providing a network of shaded footpaths in our towns to encourage residents to embrace more sustainable modes of transport.
“We each have a responsibility to shape the legacy we leave for future generations and I encourage the community to consider walking, cycling or catching a bus as a healthy alternative to driving cars to reduce carbon emissions and our own personal carbon footprint.”
