Need extra land for farming or for your horses to roam free? Southern Downs Regional Council is currently inviting tender submissions for seven vacant allotments for long-term commercial or domestic use.
The move aligns with Council’s Land Optimisation Strategy which aims to maximise opportunities available for Council owned or controlled land and opens up an exciting avenue for the community to engage in a secure long-term lease.
Council’s CEO Dave Burges said Council was hoping the land would be repurposed and used productively, rather than remain vacant and under-utilised.
“Council is aware that vacant land which is under-utilized does not benefit the community nor contribute to the local economy,” Mr Burges said.
“We are guided by our Land Optimisation Strategy and are committed to furthering opportunities that promote sustainable land-use.
“This tender presents a unique opportunity for the right applicants to secure affordable land for allowable uses, with the allotments varying in size and opportunity.
“The available land is a mix of trust and freehold tenure, with Council open to maximising the potential uses and being considerate of financial, economic and management consequences.
“There are various benefits to the community in offering the land allotments for lease such as additional space for grazing or for horses and small animals. Often residents are limited in what they can do on their own land, so they may wish to consider leasing vacant land for various purposes.”
