Southern Downs Regional Council maintenance crews are currently investigating a contained sewerage overflow at Bracker Creek on McEvoy Street following a blockage in the sewer main.
Wastewater Treatment Operators responded immediately and proactively to address the issue and samples from the river will be sent to Toowoomba for accredited testing as part of the process.
A spokesperson said Council was taking all of the necessary actions required to remediate the issue and minimise the impact of the overflow.
“Overflow has run into an open drain at the end of Lyons Street and is now contained in a pond. The overflow has not passed the railway line and it has not reached the Condamine River as Bracker Creek is not flowing at the moment,” the spokesperson said.
“Crews are onsite cleaning the affected area and sucker trucks are pumping out the overflow and returning it to the sewer.
“Public safety is very important and while we investigate the issue, swimming and fishing is not permitted in Bracker Creek and watering gardens with creek water is prohibited until further notice.
“Pollution signs have been erected to advise the public to avoid the area until further notice.”
The Department of Environment and Science have been notified via its pollution hotline.
Further updates will be provided to the community as they become available and Council thanks the local residents for their understanding and cooperation.
Anyone with concerns about the overflow can contact the Customer Service Centre on 1300 697 372.
