Following the State Government’s advice that COVID-19 restrictions will be eased from Saturday, 2 May, Southern Downs dams will be reopened to the public.
From 2 May residents and visitors will be able to access Leslie Dam, Connolly Dam, and Storm King Dam for some activities. However, it is important to note that Storm King Dam is still closed to power boats and jet skis due to the low water level.
While restrictions have eased, it is important that residents continue to practice social distancing, good personal hygiene, and don’t travel beyond 50 kilometres of their home. Persons that reside together in one household may only be joined by one other person.
Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Vic Pennisi also reminded residents that normal safety precautions should still be adhered to as well.
“I’m sure that everyone is keen to enjoy a day out on or near the water, but please remember your regular safety precautions as well as social distancing,” said Mayor Vic Pennisi.
“I would like to thank residents for their patience over the past months. I hope that residents enjoy a well-deserved day out in the sunshine and fresh air, but importantly remain vigilant with COVID-19 precautions.”
Dams and recreational areas will be opened for fishing, boating, picnics and other activities however barbecue, playground, and previously closed public toilet facilities will remain closed. Residents can find a list of accessible public toilets on Council’s COVID-19 Portal. All campgrounds remain closed until further notice and Council officers will continue to undertake inspections of dams and campgrounds.
Residents are reminded that Queensland Police Service can issue on-the-spot fines for breaches of the Chief Health Officer’s directions.
