Attention all kids, parents and push-bike enthusiasts!
Southern Downs Regional Council has been successful in obtaining funding through the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program to construct a learn-to-ride bike pathway within Australiana Park, Warwick.
Council has engaged a landscape architect to design the learn-to-ride bike pathway who has extensive experience in designing enjoyable cycling facilities.
The architect has incorporated various aspects into the facility to suit children of all ages and all cycling abilities. There will be a specific area for junior riders who are just starting to learn to ride their bikes, but the design doesn’t stop there. It will include areas for more advanced riders over challenging terrain, such as a bridge/culvert, a cattle grid, a railway crossing, corrugations, a dry creek bed and features undulating pathways (called “Whoops”) with berms and cambers on the corners. In order to help riders become familiar with road safety, traffic signs and painted arrows on the pathway have been incorporated into the design as well as typical road features such as overtaking lanes, pedestrian crossings, intersections including a roundabout and a one-way road.
Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the bikeway would be a great asset to Warwick for the young and the not-so-young keen to learn to ride a bike.
“It doesn’t stop there, however, with the more challenging route for more experienced riders – I reckon this is going to be a really exciting family destination when it’s up and running,” said Minister Stirling Hinchliffe.
“This is exactly the sort of project the Palaszczuk Government’s $600 million, job-creating Works for Queensland program supports.”
The facility has been designed to be drought resilient by using rock-mulch gardens and plants and trees that require little water.
Part of the concept for Australiana Park is to incorporate the history of the district. Should you have any historical pieces that could be incorporated as character pieces or repurposed as artwork in the Park please contact Council and include a photograph of the piece for assessment.
