Last week, in the General Council Meeting, Southern Downs Regional Council fare-welled and thanked Neil Meiklejohn for his 20 years of service to his community. As a gesture of thanks and momento of his time, Councillor Meiklejohn was presented with a clock (pictured below).
Neil Meiklejohn has served his community in many ways over the last 20 years as a Councillor. Neil began his career in the Warwick Shire Council and, when councils were amalgamated, he was re-elected as a Councillor for the Southern Downs Regional Council.
Councillor Neil Meiklejohn has treated the trust placed in him by residents with the utmost respect; he is always the first person ready to assist during emergencies and disasters, he is never unavailable for a chat, and – most importantly – he is always transparent about his opinions even if it is not what others want to hear.
Many Councillors remarked on the personal anecdotes that they shared with Neil, while others thanked him for being a stalwart and dedicated member of the community. Neil Meiklejohn stands out as a man who has always put his hand up to help others, to share his deep well of knowledge, and for being unfailingly kind and honest.
But it is not only Councillors who share fond memories with Councillor Meiklejohn. The staff of Southern Downs Regional Council also wish Neil the very best and thank him for his service. For those who have been lucky enough to work alongside the Councillor on various projects, his exceptional passion for local government has left an indelible mark. Those who did not work with him in a professional capacity still know Neil by his reputation as a friendly and approachable man with an incredible knack for finding common interests.
For Councillor Meiklejohn, this is not a retirement, this is the beginning of a new and vibrant chapter. During the General Council Meeting, Councillor Meiklejohn said he had seen a lot of changes throughout his time as Councillor and he was looking forward to what Southern Downs Regional Council would accomplish in the next 20 years.
From Southern Downs Regional Council, we wish you all the very best, Neil, we can’t wait to hear the latest news of what is behind this next door you are about to open.
