It’s time to mark the calendar and start the countdown as the Granite Belt will be welcoming a very special guest in the coming months.
Southern Downs Regional Council and Queensland State Health are excited to announce that the region will welcome NRL superstar Jonathon Thurston to Stanthorpe on 20 October.
Jonathon will be talking to the students at Stanthorpe Primary and High School and St Joseph’s Primary and Secondary about building resilience, perseverance in the face of great difficulty, as well as how to take care of yourself so that you can take care of others.
The region has been persevering through severe drought for many years while also rebuilding after other natural disasters. Understanding what it means to be resilient and persevere through tough circumstances is paramount for the young people growing up to shape our region.
Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said the visit was about highlighting resilience, adaptability, and the stalwart nature of the youngest members of our community.
“The students of our region have already dealt with severe drought, bushfire, and now a pandemic. Our young people have shown a level of resilience well beyond their years and I think it is important that they are recognised and supported by their role models,” said Mayor Vic Pennisi.
“Jonathon has a reputation for respecting and supporting those around him as much as his athletic ability. Having someone like Jonathon speak about the being flexible in the face adversity was timely.
“The hard part for many will be waiting until 20 October, but that’s a pretty good problem to have!”
