Council to consider new tourist routes

28 August 2020

At the 27 August 2020 Ordinary Meeting, Council endorsed public consultation on a proposed new Tourist Route and alteration to the current Armistice Way Tourist Route.

The changes have been proposed after the Amiens History Association requested the current Armistice Way Tourist Route be redirected to enhance history enthusiasts’ visitor experience and incorporate more historic locations, including a new WWI commemorative attraction at the Amiens Heritage Legacy Centre.

In considering the request, Council officers outlined such a change would exclude businesses along the Thulimbah section of Amiens Road.  Accordingly, a new tourist route is proposed to service the attractions along this stretch, in addition to an amended route for the Armistice Way.

The naming of the new route would be the subject of consultation with industry, the community and other relevant stakeholders.

Any alteration to the existing Armistice Way Tourist Route and establishment of a new tourist route would require new signage and approval from the Department of Transport and Main Roads. One of the core criteria for departmental approval is that ‘the route must have significant tourism and/or scenic appeal, including a reasonable frequency of quality tourist attractions to maintain the interest of the visitor’.
