Just like our versatile seniors, this year’s Seniors Week has adapted to our new socially-distanced and digital lifestyles! For the first time in its 60 year history, the event will be virtual.
COVID-19 may have changed our everyday lives in ways we never imagined possible, but the 2020 Seniors Week boasts a full calendar of digital activities so that we can continue to celebrate the contributions of our seniors in the safest way possible.
Portfolio Councillor for Community Services Sheryl Windle encouraged the community to embrace the new-look event and activities and share a Virtual Hug this year.
“We are all adapting to changing times and the 2020 Seniors Week has introduced a range of online events to this year’s celebrations to ensure our community can still honour the meaningful contributions of our seniors,” Cr Windle said.
“Many of our seniors have felt the full effects of COVID-19 social distancing restrictions and dealt with isolation from their support networks, family and friends for extended periods, so it is very timely to recognise their valuable role in our community.
“This year, I urge both the young and old to connect and engage online and from the comforts of home.
“I also encourage family and friends to assist those seniors who may not have access to online activities to help them experience this virtual hug.”
Council on the Ageing Queensland Inc. has also created a handy guide that can be printed and shared with people who may need support to access the virtual events to enable as many people as possible to access the online events on their smartphone or tablet devices.
Celebrations will wrap up on Sunday 23 August with a very special ‘We Care’ Day to show support and gratitude for those who have stepped up to the plate to support one another and to those who have joined the Care Army.
Seniors Week provides opportunities to promote positive community attitudes towards older people and ageing, facilitate community participation, and enhance community connections.
Seniors Week will be held from Saturday 15 – Sunday 23 August 2020. Find information, listing of events, and more at www.qldseniorsweek.org.au.
