Southern Downs Regional Council is proud to open public consultation, inviting community feedback on two legacy projects to honour local sporting hero and Olympic discus bronze medal winner, Matt Denny.
Following a hugely successful welcome home street parade in Allora on Friday 4 October, Council’s proposal includes:
1. Naming the Allora Cricket Ground discus ring after Matt: Council proposes to name the discus ring at the Allora Cricket Ground in honour of Matt, recognising his outstanding achievements and contributions to the sport. This initiative aims to inspire future generations and celebrate Matt’s legacy in his hometown.
2. Establishing a walking path in Dalrymple Park: Council proposes to establish a walking path in Dalrymple Park, featuring markers that highlight the distances of the various records achieved by Matt. This path will serve as a tribute to Matt’s remarkable accomplishments and also promote health and fitness within the community.
In inviting feedback, Councillor Carla Pidgeon said the Allora community and region was still celebrating Matt’s Olympic win and his outstanding performance on the world stage at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“The community has always been immensely proud of Matt’s sporting successes, and to see him win bronze in the men’s discus in Paris is a crowning achievement,” Mayor Hamilton said.
“We welcome the community’s feedback on how we can create a lasting tribute to his remarkable career.”
Councillor Russell Wantling said Matt’s story reminds us all of the power of perseverance and the importance of recognising local talent.
“Matt’s journey is one of dedication and perseverance, and these projects will celebrate his sporting triumphs and also inspire others to dream big,” Councillor Wantling said.
“Honouring Matt with these tributes is a wonderful way to celebrate his incredible achievements and the spirit of our community.”
Mayor Melissa Hamilton said it would be a privilege to celebrate his accomplishments in such lasting ways.
“We want the broader community to be part of this process and help us determine how you want to best honour Matt’s legacy,” Mayor Hamilton said.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to ensure that the projects reflect the pride we all feel for one of our own”.
Council encourages all community members to participate in the consultation process and share their thoughts on these proposals. Feedback can be submitted to mail@sdrc.qld.gov.au. Public consultation is now open and closes at 5pm Friday 1 November 2024. After the public consultation period, a report will be presented to Council for the final decision on the proposals.
