The Southern Downs community is all too aware of the risk of bushfire. The tireless efforts of Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) volunteers on the frontline help keep our communities prepared and safe.
From Sunday 28 July to Saturday 3 August, Rural Fire Service Week will celebrate the unwavering commitment of more than 26,000 RFSQ volunteers who dedicate countless hours responding to natural disasters and educating the community on disaster preparedness.
Ahead of the week-long celebration, Mayor Melissa Hamilton paid tribute to these volunteers who play a crucial role in safeguarding our communities.
"Living in an area prone to bushfires, we understand all too well the critical role that the Rural Fire Service Queensland plays in safeguarding our homes, our environment and our loved ones,” Mayor Hamilton said.
“The volunteers' readiness to respond at a moment's notice, their extensive training and their commitment to protecting our community are essential to our region's resilience.
“During Rural Fire Service Week, let’s celebrate the courageous work these volunteers do to protect our community and make us safer.”
Councillor Cynthia McDonald shared Mayor Hamilton’s sentiments.
"As we honour Rural Fire Service Week, let us all take a moment to recognise and appreciate the phenomenal work of these volunteers,” Councillor McDonald said.
“They are the backbone of our emergency response during bushfire season, and they put themselves on the front line, often in the face of immense danger, to protect our communities and ensure our safety.
“Their courage, selflessness, and tireless efforts are truly inspiring."
